Sick Hyenas hail from Hamburg, Germany, but “Oh Mother” sounds like it was born during one dark night in the American West. It opens with the kind of galloping guitar that might turn up during the credit sequence of a forgotten spaghetti western (it’s not for nothing that they self-describe their sound as “Tarantino Psycho Pop”). But then it hits the chorus, and the film melts: the tempo slows, the sound buckles and vocalist Velvet Bein wails a weird peyote nightmare while the band flails and weaves around him. And then, just as quickly, they get back on the horse and the song barrels off into the sunset.
