A lot has happened on the hip-hop fringe since Shabazz Palaces released their last album in 2011. Similarly genre-breaking, fuzz-loving acts like Death Grips and .clipping have risen to prominence, making the prospect of electro-surrealist rap slightly less novel than it once did. But no matter: “#CAKE,” from the forthcoming Lese Majesty is still wonderfully weirder than most, and has an audible underpinning of funk other innovators lack. The turbine-engine percussion, rubbery synth bass and Ishmael Butler’s bonkers Prince-monologue-style delivery keep Shabazz Palaces firmly in their own galaxy.
