Rosetta, “Soot”

Anyone who misses ISIS — the band, not the terror organization, as ABC recently pointed out — will find a lot to love about the long overlooked (outside underground circles, at least) Philadelphia outfit Rosetta. As heard in “Soot” below, the quartet does more than just fuse the patient peaks and valleys of post-rock acts like Mogwai with the sheer nihilism and noise of leftfield metal LPs. Calming and cathartic in equal measure, they let minor-keyed chords glide over cryptic samples, hypnotic drum hooks and gently submerged screams like the score to one long nightmare that’s unfolding at 240 frames per second.

Rosetta’s Flies to Flame EP is due out October 10 through Translation Loss.
