One could do a New Atlanta feature every year and it would wrangle a different group of rappers and singers tackling a new sound, keeping the south fresh as ever. While Rome Fortune has been bubbling under for awhile — his mixtape Beautiful Pimp is a standout of early 2013 — but “FriendsMaybe” is bound to get him an extra heap of deserved attention. Linking up with man of month and recent of OVO Sound signee, R&B eccentric iLoveMakonnen, Fortune delivers a bubbly tell-your-friends-to-shove-it sex jam. In its own weird way, it reminds me of Harlem World closer “Jealous Guys,” but it could be because Makonnen’s hook is somewhere between lounge singer and Mase’s off-kilter crooning. Producer Money Karlo is the true standout, though, his beat like a joyous level of Mario Kart that’s located in the Bay. It makes me hate that 100s quit rap. It makes me side-eye myself from liking a non-rapping Makonnen song so much. It makes me super anxious for Rome’s upcoming Small VVorld EP.
