Pop Zeus main main Mike Hodges excels at irresistible power pop, writ in miniature. His debut was jam-packed with hooks and heartache, the sound of one man baring his soul as filtered through a standard-issue tape deck. The just-released cassette Tell Me So (via the excellent label Gnar Tapes) ups the ante even further. Hodges swings the heartache wide and long, and the song builds up to the kind of waves-crashing-on-the-beach chorus that defines BOMP! magazine staples. Hodges sands off the edges, making the song tinny and crackly, which only adds to its scrappy, man-against-the-world feel.
