The ongoing compilation series by the excellent dark music site CVLT Nation has been fascinating to follow. Every few months, the site selects a classic album and asks bands from across the music spectrum to select a song to cover. That the results are varied is one of the things that makes the series so interesting. On this month’s pick, Joy Division’s classic Unknown Pleasures, noise group Theologian completely reconfigures “Ceremony,” turning it into something uniquely their own. Other bands, like Pinkish Black, take a more direct route. Their rendition of the harrowing “New Dawn Fades” punches up the song’s underlying sense of dread, making it feel even more haunting and funereal.
