William Table — or whatever his real name is — has many gifts, but one of them is for delightfully absurd song titles. Take a quick leap across any of the nine records he has available on Bandcamp, and you’ll find such absurdist bon mots as “Mary Poppins Trash Compactor,” “‘It Made Me A Believer’ – Actual Quote,” and my personal favorite, “It’s Beginning to Look as though God created the Concept of Debt.” By that score, “Baptist Church” is relatively tame. A rickety cycle of just two chords, in the song William cedes the vocal duties to Becky Chair Table (I just write ‘em as listed, folks), who uses suburban developments like Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins as a strange and strangely effective metaphor for disappointment and dashed hopes.
