The Australian label Aarght is a reliable output for delightfully warped music from bands who work from a punk base, but take that defiant ethos into unusual directions. Case in point: NUN, a Melbourne band who craft icy minimal wave as blank and menacing as Maximillian. “Evoke the Sleep” chugs ahead steadily, wobbly sine-wave electronics wrapping around Jenny Branagan’s pissed-off schoolmarm delivery. It’s Commodore-core anti-wave for those who like their music terse and ruthless.
