In “Manners,” the Athens band New Madrid pulls off a tricky hybrid, crossing the kind of stiff, emotionless rhythmic chug typically found in krautrock with frenzied slashes of guitar, resulting in a song that feels like a battering ram — pushing defiantly forward with incredible force. The album it’s from — Sunswimmer, released in February — is one of the year’s hidden treasures, full of slow-build songs that rattle and claw. You can hear all of that tenacity in “Manners,” a song that gets fiercer as it builds to its great, clattering conclusion.
