Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens’ last record was, as the name of the group implies, a batch of slow-burning gospel music, rooted in Shelton’s sanctified ad libs. The Spirit is still present on “Sinner,” the first single from the forthcoming Cold World, but musically, the group ventures into the kind of low-wattage R&B that their label Daptone has become famous for. The groove is loose — it’s not hard to imagine the instrumental being sampled for some much-desired Wu-Tang return-to-form — and the Gospel Queens, as always, provide set dressing for Shelton’s committed testifying.
