On Record Store Day — April 19, in case you forgot — Captured Tracks will release a 7″ by unjustly-overlooked Long Island power-poppers Milk ‘n’ Cookies, a band notable for being one of maybe 6 cool things to ever come out of Long Island. (I write this as a Patchogue native.) Today, they’ve released the B-Side to that 7″, a tidy, spiraling little number called “Nots” (no relation to the excellent Goner Records band of the same name). A weird, corkscrewing riff orbits Justin Strauss’s feather-soft, shy-glam vocals. But it’s not all, er, milk and cookies. “I wanna win/ I don’t want nothing else,” goes the chorus, concluding, “If I can’t/ I’m gonna kill myself.” It’s a surprise cyanide chaser after a tall glass of strawberry soda.
