It’s been a busy 2014 for Opal Tapes, a cassette label from the remote English coastal town of Redcar, Teeside who nonetheless find themselves standard bearers for the modern confluence of club music and lo-fidelity tape murk. Of their current batch, I’m liking this surprise 60 minutes of music from Mike Simonetti, founder of the Troubleman Unlimited and Italians Do It Better labels. Side A, “Dark/Light” is a tirelessly inventive half-hour of modular cascades, twinkling kosmische and live drum battery that’s endearingly tricky to pin down.
