Money is a technology. The rise in recent years of cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin helps drive this point home, but before virtual cash — before fiat money — there was gold. M.I.A. has evinced a particular interest in the shiny stuff, sharing an all-gold-everything video for “Bring the Noize,” from last year’s Matangi, and it might not be a coincidence that “Gold,” her new song with previous production collaborators the Partysquad, surrounds yellow-metal references with name-checks of more recent tech: Skype, Kindle, iTunes, GPS, drone missiles. It can scan as random logorrhea or some kind of all-encompassing social critique, but at less than two minutes, the track — while M.I.A. professes there’s “no time for games” — leaves little space for deep thoughts. Instead, it’s best to revel in the claps, the whistles, the squelches and remember the value of noisy liberation. On a Friday night, silence is fool’s gold.
