To judge by the opening spoken-word snippet, a line from the Dodgeball movie trailer, Mastodon and Butthole Surfers‘ Gibby Haynes combined equate to something like the underdog misfits led by Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller in the 2004 comedy. “Atlanta” (via Stereogum), named for the metal band’s hometown, could certainly soundtrack scenes of frenzied, amateurish pelts and tosses, though its thrashing gallop and garbled shouts skew more Adult Swim than multiplex— after all, the song is part of the cable network’s Adult Swim Singles Series. Anyway, there’s an emergency phone call and a ratatat tirade, and the whole thing ends with sinister laughter. It’s unclear how Mastodon and Haynes would’ve handled Dodgeball‘s famous Lance Armstrong scene, but there’s still time for a follow-up collaboration — perhaps titled after Butthole Surfers’ own Austin, Texas? Look for it as part of ESPN 8′s Singles Series, “45s from the Ocho.”
