Producer L’Orange’s 2013 album-length collaboration with Stik Figa, The City Under the City, was one of the year’s best records, a murky deep-dive into the underworld brought to life by Stik Figa’s rich narration and L’Orange’s neo-noir production. His approach to the forthcoming The Orchid Days is similarly backward-looking — this time, the source material comes from scratchy old jazz and ragtime records. But, as always, L’Orange combines them to create something utterly absorbing — a transmission on an old radio crackling in from decades past. Blu — who, after a stunning run in the early ’00s seems to have gone relatively quiet in recent years — turns in a typically nimble verse.
