Literature, “New Jacket”

The 2012 debut from the Philadelphia band Literature was full of anxious jangle-pop, the kind of loose chords and rushed tempos that defined the British indie bands of the mid ’80s. On “New Jacket,” the first single from forthcoming follow-up Chorus, the velocity remains, but the edges are softer, the picture more blurred. The result feels fuller and warmer and more like a fantasy — a far-off courtship shot by a camera with a vaseline-smeared lens. For all of this, though, the song isn’t indistinct — it blooms slowly and beautifully, full of color and light.
