From the get-go, there’s something off about “Endless Moths Swarming,” the second song on Missouri microtonal black metal maven Jute Gyte’s Vast Chains. There’s the usual identifiable black metal riff gallop — but what’s going on underneath it? What’s that weird, grandfather-clock bass that sounds like it’s grafted in from another song entirely, playing in a different meter, and in a different key? And why, instead of sounding merely wrong, does it instead sound chilling? And why, one minute in, do the riffs begin to pull apart and detune? What the hell is going on in this song? Who is this guy?
