Who will be the next indie-rock idol to wake up to the allure of the a.m.? Beck, of course, got there first with this year’s radiant Morning Phase. J Mascis followed last month with winningly sleepy-eyed “Every Morning,” the first track from the Dinosaur Jr. frontman’s new solo album, Tied to a Star, set to arrive in the United States on August 26 via Sub Pop. And now he’s also convinced Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, to stumble out of bed and over to the recording studio for, yes, “Wide Awake” (via The Guardian), a duet in the gentle spirit of Mascis’ 2011 solo album, Several Shades of Why. Centered around finger-picked guitar, gleaming keys and the two singers’ unmistakable voices, with occasional splashes of percussion and creaks of electric guitar, it’s graceful and poignant, with an awakening that isn’t necessarily only literal: “Torn apart with lies,” the two sing in harmony. Better start another pot of coffee: Tied to a Star also features guest appearances from Mark Mulcahy, Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins, and Young@Heart Chorus’ Ken Maiuri.
