“Salt of the earth, it don’t mean shit,” goes the chorus to “Salt,” the first single from the forthcoming Sacred Bones EP by Austin pessimists Institute. The music that surrounds that declaration is equally grim; there are the galloping hellhound guitars that populated the most frantic Joy Division songs, percussion so airless and flat it sounds like it’s being played inside a sealed mausoleum, and vocals full of a queasy combination of anger and cold panic. The words — that central phrase aside — are mostly indecipherable, but so much the better. When you’re communicating pure spiritual horror, sometimes the English language just doesn’t cut it.
