Like, say, the bands of the Italians Do It Better stable, Glasgow’s Happy Meals feel like a reading of disco from an underground punk/DIY perspective. Traditionally, this is a fusion that has been seen to dampen the virtues of either — are you out to make aspirational dance music, or subvert it? But on “Altered Images”, musical/romantic partners Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook make it work, and beautifully. She speak-sings softy in her native French, and together they navigate a blissful, gently seductive machine pop of rough-edged drum machine and twinkling analog synthesizer. Debut album Apéro follows on Night School early next month.
