HAIM (ft. A$AP Ferg), “My Song 5″

In the middle of the bright-sun California pop spectacular that was HAIM’s Days Are Gone, “My Song 5″ was a rare thundercloud. It sounded fully deconstructed, instruments dropping out and re-entering, the tempo lurching and wheezing, weird tuba-like sounds blowing up the bottom end. But it’s those very qualities — plus the copious amounts of empty space — that make it well-suited for a guest spot, and in this barely-changed remix of the song, that spot is assumed by A$AP Ferg. His verse is an odd one: he drops the phrase “female band” within the first few seconds of appearing (rhyming it with “females banned”) before accusing a former lover of cheating on him with another woman, implying he’s only angry because he wasn’t asked to join. The tone is jokey and, in a way, it expands on the song’s subtle takedown of a lying lover. It’s right on the edge, though, of upending the entire affair. When his verse finally ends, it’s not a moment too soon.
