Two cerebral, Southern California-based hip-hop lovers have combined, with predictably heady, groove-riding results. Kendrick Lamar is only one of several guests, including none other than Snoop Dogg, on Flying Lotus‘s upcoming album You’re Dead!, due out October 7 in the United States via Warp. But when the Compton rapper is at his most smoked-out and ruminative, he’s a natural fit for the hyperkinetic, jazz-teleporting bump of the producer and part-time MC whose real name is Steven Ellison.
Lamar’s introspective, jittery verse, capped with a reference to an “out of body experience” and the album title, neatly suits the fluid keys and stuttery rhythms, but his sung hook — “Say you will never, ever catch me, no” — is particularly striking, especially given that it’s saved for the end. Another Lamar-FlyLo song reportedly had to be left off You’re Dead! for “political reasons”; Lamar has also been said to be hogging the beats Ellison made for his rap alter ego, Captain Murphy. In other words, K.Dot and the Captain might fly again.
