“Father Murphy is the sound of the Catholic sense of Guilt.” That’s how this Italian duo describe themselves, and it isn’t too wide of the mark. The terrifying (and appropriately-titled) Pain is On Our Side Now is a deep dive into ice-cold despondency, the kind of panicked depression that kicks in when you realize it’s impossible to bottom out because there is no bottom — you just keep falling. “Bones Got Dry” is the album’s grimmest hour, a nauseating protracted sub-basement drone that eventually recedes to reveal weird, pinched, wraithlike voices intoning some kind of infernal litany in the shadows.
