Eric Chenaux isn’t so much a one-man band as a one-man orchestra. On the title track of his forthcoming Skullsplitter, due next year on Constellation, he takes electric and nylon-stringed guitars and fires them through a multitude of effects until they form a warm, supine drone, like a rank of French horns or a low, earthy hum of strings. Atop this, Chenaux’s voice floats bold and free, like he’s singing some beloved songbook standard. Listen close, though: it’s about the hard stuff:  “A real skull-splitter,” he sings, “To get us through the winter…”
