For the bulk of her mesmerizing album Olive Juice, Los Angeles musician Emily Reo’s voice appears in triplicate, harmonizing with itself eerily and robotically as it glides gently over whistling, extraterrestrial analog synths. But rather than feeling like a sci-fi mad scientists lab, there’s something gentle and beatific about Reo’s songs — they’re lovely late-night lullabys for androids drifting quietly off to sleep. Built to Spill’s beautiful, moving “Car” was practically designed for this treatment; Reo’s take on it is revelatory, making it more graceful by — paradoxically — making it more synthetic.
