In just the first phrase of “Next Gold,” Dilly Dally’s Katie Monks enters the pantheon of great rock vocalists, the kind of frontwoman who doesn’t merely sing, she embodies. Like some superhuman combination of Dan Bejar and Patti Smith, Monks throws herself into every word, full-bodied, passionate, committed. It’s the kind of performance that makes you bolt upright the second you hear it. It’s perfect for “Next Gold,” which starts with Monks declaring “Shoulda gone home, but I stayed” while guitars fall down around her like a collapsing building.
Dilly Dally are one of many bands on the increasingly-impressive roster of Canada’s Buzz Records, which also features Weaves, HSY, and several others. They’re offering a free label sampler on eMusic, and a further investigation into the label will yield endless rewards.
