Few could predict the Pitchfork-stoked rise of Deafheaven, a band that — to quote a Wondering Sound review of their breakthrough record Sunbather — has somehow found “the perfect middle ground between Slowdive and Marduk.” And while we won’t make too many assumptions about the band’s third album based on the Adult Swim single below, it certainly doesn’t seem like they’re about to soften their black-metal side now that NPR is listening. “From the Kettle Onto the Coil” sharpens their knives instead, bursting through the gates with guitars blazing and frontman George Clarke howling at the moon until the track’s tortured tendencies give way to a blissful bridge and one last series of primal screams.
