Although he established his reputation with impish New Zealand clutter-popsters the Clean, David Kilgour’s solo records are typically characterized by both their grace and beauty. Solo debut Here Come the Cars and 2001′s A Feather in the Engine were particular high-water marks, full of gently-twinkling guitars and Kilgour’s soft, assured vocals. From the sound of “Comin’ On,” the forthcoming End Times Undone will continue in that lineage. Guitars lap like waves on a beach, and Kilgour slowly unfurls one of his most delicate, stirring vocals to date. Kilgour’s phrasing and the song’s impressionistic lyrics recall the Go-Betweens in their prime; it is wonderfully familiar and as comforting as an embrace.
