When he’s not recording close friends like Pharmakon in the back of his impeccably curated Brooklyn record shop Heaven Street, Sean Ragon is busy refining his rickety version of psych-steeped folk in Cult of Youth. That’s the starting point, at least; post-punk music also plays a major part in his songwriting process, as heard on the lead-off single from the band’s upcoming Final Days (Sacred Bones, November 11) LP. While two of the album’s tracks pass the 7-minute mark, “Empty Faction” doesn’t waste any time whipping up a perfect storm of piss and vinegar. Maybe this is the song he wrote in prison? (According to a press release, that’s where some of the record’s lyrics were wrapped.)
