We’ve all set lofty expectations for ourselves and ended up severely disappointed when things didn’t quite pan out the way we’d hoped. Bethan frontwoman Jessi Hall has a solution: Keep them low to begin with. In “Low Expectations,” from the Texas band’s forthcoming Time Gone By LP, she sings, “The secret to happiness is low expectations,” and “The key is underselling.” Hall’s warm alto is reminiscent of the Delgados’ Emma Pollock, with a backing of strings and jazzy piano, cut through with clean, low electric guitar.
