The California label Captcha has quietly been releasing some of the finest psych-informed rock and roll for the last several years, each new release a little stronger and more confident than the one that came before. Though they’re best known — if they’re known at all — for the woozy duo Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, their entire roster is rich with bands who nestle haunting melodies beneath layers of fuzz. The just-released, pay-what-you-wish compilation Introducing offers a handy summary of the label’s roster, and it’s anchored by this bleary track from Iowa musician Bob Bucko Jr, who records as BBJr. A cover of Spacemen 3 (arguably the label’s musical forefathers), it retains the original’s bleary melody but repositions it squarely inside ambling, rickety folk.
