Whether you’ve been following Arca since his UNO NYC days or learned about him from his work on Yeezus and rocked with him for his subsequent mixtape &&&&&, you know he has a penchant for piercing emotional darkness that still makes you move. “Thievery,” the lead single from his debut full-length Xen (which is out November 4 on Mute), sticks with his signature slick wickedness, but there’s something new here. The track, while skittering and subtly off-kilter throughout, is built atop percussion generally relegated to reggaeton. Arca is from Venezuela, a place not generally known for reggaeton — although, 10 years after the release of Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina,” which turned the genre global, there are a crop of kids producing it across that continent — perhaps, this is a hint his dark arts will be influenced by his Latin roots.
