In “I’m Not Falling Asleep,” Canadian songwriter Andy Shauf is kept awake by fear and uncertainty: “When will I ever be safe from myself, if the danger all lies between heaven and hell?” he asks at the song’s start. It’s a soothing, stately waltz, led by piano and accented by crescendoing clarinets. “Please stay a while, I’m not falling asleep,” Shauf pleads, his smooth voice layered on top of itself. The song comes from The Bearer of Bad News, out February 3 on Tender Loving Empire/Party Damage Records.
