This one’s all about the hook: “Like an echo-cho-cho-cho-cho, I-I-I follow you around.” There are very few (possibly zero?) pop songs where stuttering the hook is a bad idea, and “Echo” is no exception. Adam Lempel is a composer living in Baltimore who also writes string quartets, but you won’t find much formal cross-wiring here – this is just an excellent chamber pop song, a cello and female vocals laid atop his slightly froggy baritone. It has some of the dry sophistication and fizzing pleasure of Magnetic Fields.
