“Ugly Head” could be the theme song to a television series about the world’s most DIY spy. It opens with a slow-rolling bass and a slash of surf guitar, the mood tense, the drums rolling and clattering. Scene: the luckless spy — in leather jacket, ripped jeans — ducks behind dumpsters and into alleyways, barely avoiding being spotted. In the song’s final moments the vocals come in, panicked and ragged. Is it the moment our spy gets caught? Or the moment they do the catching? “Ugly Head” fades out too suddenly to offer any clues.
