If their name isn’t a clear indication, the New Paltz, NY group What Moon Things favor the shadowy side of the street. Their debut is a mammoth, gripping descent into darkness: opening track “Vampire” lurches and thunders, recalling the gravity of bands like Hum but spiking it with the heartsick longing of foundational emo bands like Braid. The rest of the album sticks close to this pattern: drums collapse, guitars heave and frontman Jake Harms wails from the center of the din. It’s a stormy transmission from a bleeding heart, turbulent and terrified.
