Anyone familiar with the work of Butch Vig, either as a producer or as one of the principle personalities behind Garbage, will be taken aback by the opening moments of “I Don’t Know Why I Love You” from Vig’s new band, Emperors of Wyoming. The song opens not with the shriek of feedback or a wallop of drums but with… a banjo. It’s startling to be sure, but from there the song opens up into a lovely midtempo folk rocker perfectly suited to a warm summer afternoon. The Emperors are primarily the project of Vig and Phil Davis, who collaborated in the mid ’80s in the group Fire Town before pursuing separate musical paths over the course of the next decade. The reconnected in 2009 and, with Frank and Peter Anderson, on guitar and bass respectively began working on what would become the group’s debut. The result is a batch of melodic rock and roll that splits the difference between ’80s college rock and Midwestern country.
