“I was always searching for significance,” Lecrae told Wondering Sound’s Christina Lee in a recent interview. The rapper’s latest album, Anomaly, is having a significant impact: This week, it topped the Billboard 200, Gospel Albums and Christian Albums charts all at once. Last night, Lecrae Moore stood in on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with house band the Roots, whose righteous soul-funk melded neatly with his message-oriented rhymes as he performed bits of Anomaly songs such as “Nuthin,” “Fear,” “All I Need Is You,” “Say I Won’t” and “Welcome to America.”

Moore also recorded a “How I Made the Song” behind-the-scenes video, explaining how for first Anomaly single “Nuthin,” producer Gawvi gave him an instrumental inspired by West Coast hip-hop duo Luniz’s 1995 hit “I Got 5 on It“; the beat, Lecrae recalls, was so “phenomenal” that he decided to write lyrics the same night. “I just wanted to articulate that I love music, and I love hip-hop,” he explains in the clip. “And I love substance in music, and I wanted hip-hop to have substance.”

Watch the making-of video below, and scroll down for the entire episode (fair warning, though: you may have to sit through some lengthy ads to see much of Lecrae).
