UPDATE: Dr. Luke has now counter-sued Kesha and her mother for extortion, claiming that the singer threatened to file her lawsuit and slander him if he did not release her from her contract. His lawyer stated that Kesha’s claims are “a campaign of publishing outrageous and untrue statements.”
According to TMZ, the lawsuit claims that Dr. Luke made repeated sexual advances toward the artist from the beginning of her career, provided drugs and alcohol, and eventually forced himself upon her on multiple occasions. In addition, the lawsuit lists a variety of insults, among them, “You are not that pretty, you are not that talented, you are just lucky to have me,” as well as referring to her as “a fat f***ing refrigerator,” as examples of emotional abuse. There also appear to be several instances where the singer was physically abused, including one where Dr. Luke “violently thrash[ed] his arms at her,” until she fled his Malibu residence.
Kesha’s stuggle with an eating disorder have been well documented, she addressed her troubles with Teen Vogue this past June. In her lawsuit, she cites the alleged abuse as the primary reason for the eating disorder and as a result, she has asked that the court set her free of her current contract with Dr. Luke.
Kesha’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, made the following statement to TMZ:
This lawsuit is a wholehearted effort by Kesha to regain control of her music career and her personal freedom after suffering for ten years as a victim of mental manipulation, emotional abuse and an instance of sexual assault at the hands of Dr. Luke. The facts presented in our lawsuit paint a picture of a man who is controlling and willing to commit horrible acts of abuse in an attempt to intimidate an impressionable, talented, young female artist into submission for his personal gain. Kesha is focused on moving her life and her career beyond this terrible time.
Dr. Luke’s camp has yet to issue a response to the charges.
