Sorry to break the news, but the spirit-lifting new single (“i”) Kendrick Lamar dropped today may be the last we’ve heard of his new album until next year. According to Rolling Stone, the rapper is “not sure at all” if the record will be ready in time for a 2014 release.
Which isn’t to say Lamar isn’t happy with what he’s wrapped so far. Referring to the “bunch of tracks” he’s cut with Dr. Dre, he said, “[Dre's] trying to find that next thing – just really elevating himself and the team to grow as a creator.”
Meanwhile, Lamar has pushed himself on material that’s more emotional and aggressive than his breakthrough album good kid, m.A.A.d. city. “There’s one particular track I’m really excited about,” he explained. “It’s one where I just went in the booth and spilled out what I want to say at that moment. I just freestyled, because I really just wanted to grab the raw emotion of it.”
As for whether we’ll have to wait too long for his next effort, rest assured that Lamar can’t seem to stop working. “I’m definitely a studio rat,” he said. “Sometimes I go into the studio and study music. Just sit in there and vibe out to … Marvin Gaye or something like that … I haven’t been listening to a lot of the music that’s out right now. You can get influenced by it.”
