Greetings! Top of the Morning is your daily AM news round-up. We paid attention overnight and gathered relevant tidbits to share over that first cup of coffee.
Last weekend Kendrick Lamar ventured into the Bacardi Triangle; a concert series that included Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris, sponsored by the rum brand. Lamar had not performed in a while, but more importantly, he sang Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” for reporter Maud Deitch. Deitch was able to capture the moment and you can hear Lamar sing the chorus and admit that he loves the Swift single over on the FADER.
Meanwhile, the pop star seems to be intent on forming a mutual admiration society. She mentioned how often she listened to Lamar in her big cover story for Rolling Stone and now that 1989 sold over a million copies this week, Swift celebrated by lip synching to Lamar’s “Backseat Freestyle.”
First it was the Elle cover. Now, Rihanna has shared images from her Esquire shoot with Ellen von Unwerth to the absolutely delight of her fans. The steady stream of Rihanna exposure (so to speak) seems to be adding more weight to those rumors about a potential album drop arriving sooner rather than later. However, Calvin Harris stepped in to let people know that he will definitely not be on any of the singer’s new material. The higest paid DJ in the world told The Sun, “No, I’m not on the Rihanna album. I did a few things for it, but they don’t get back to you, there are a lot of people involved…She listens to everything, I know that, but she’s got a strong idea and identity and an idea of what her album should sound like.”
We believe him. The woman is definitely not shy.
Sadly, it doesn’t look like we can expect an Iggy Pop memoir anytime soon. While Men’s Journal was following the rock star around Miami, they asked if he planned to jot down his personal stories à la Patti Smith’s Just Kids. Pop replied, “If I do it now, the problem is that my life has been so shared that I’d have to write about Ron Asheton, Scott Ashteon, David Bowie; I’d have to write about Nico, all sorts of great people who have a right to their privacy.” So, it sounds like never say never, but we’re not exactly crossing our fingers for this one.
If you have a lot of cash to burn and happen to be in the Beverly Hills area this Friday, you can bid on the wedding dress that Madonna wore when she married Sean Penn. The auction house Julien’s is holding a “Icons and Idols 2014: Rock n’ Roll” event where they will be auctioning off 140 items and up to $500,000 worth of Madonna memorabilia. So if you feel like grabbing Madge’s expired American Express card from 1985, you better get over there. That one will surely go fast.
Former American Idol Clay Aiken lost his bid for Congress in yesterday’s midterm election to Representative Renee Ellmers. Sadly, the singer’s tour bus also broke down as he was leaving the polls. Rough day all around.

Hope this Wednesday treats you better, Clay.
