The collaboration between Kaytranada and Vic Mensa is titled “Drive Me Crazy,” but the results are thrillingly rational. This is how it’s supposed to work. Kaytranada (real name: Louis Celestin) is a Montreal electronic producer with upcoming sets at Coachella and Governors Ball and an album on the way via indie giant XL Recordings. Vic Mensa is a giftedly nimble rapper who has already successfully flirted with electronic dance music, rapping over Disclosure’s “When a Fire Starts to Burn” and hosting a sadboy house party with “Down on My Luck“; he’s also booked for Coachella.
Kaytranada and Mensa worked together before on Mensa’s non-album Chicago ode “Wimme Nah,” and now they’ve teamed up on “Drive Me Crazy,” the second single from Kaytranada’s upcoming album. Available on iTunes here and streaming below, it’s an inspired pairing. Both halves of the partnership bring a balance between the gritty and the sweet, whether Kaytranada’s mix of juddering low-end and glistening electronics (plus an off-kilter guitar solo) or the yin and yang of Mensa’s lithely peacocking verses and tenderly crooned hooks. “Next to Oprah at the opera, OK”? OK!
