Social consciousness has returned to music in a big way over the past year, and it hasn’t stopped spreading. Run the Jewels became a powerful voice on last year’s police-involved killings of young African-Americans last year. D’Angelo rush-released Black Messiah in recognition of the movement. Everyone from Pharrell to Beyoncé brought civil-rights politics front and center at the Grammys. Joey Bada$$ hasn’t shied away from contentious issues, either, and his latest video is perhaps his most pointed yet. In the clip for “Like Me,” which appears on his recent B4.DA.$$ and features silky-voiced guest BJ the Chicago Kid, Bada$$ ends up being wrongly shot to death by the New York police. It’s worth noting he isn’t doing this from some distant underground: B4.DA.$$ debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with 58K units shifted, better numbers than for other, more ballyhooed hip-hop releases. There’s hope.
