Why can’t the battle of the sexes also be a game? Morrissey‘s new album finds him declaring “I’m Not a Man,” less than a year after Neko Case insisted that she is a “Man.” With the Beck-produced “Just One of the Guys,” from July 29 album The VoyagerJenny Lewis sets cutting observations about the differences between the genders against a sunny folk-rock lope. The self-directed video (via GQ) heaps on even more delicious sugar to help the bitter medicine go down: Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway, Twilight alum Kristen Stewart and actress-singer Brie Larson (of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, for one) join Lewis as she joins “the guys.” The star-studded cast backs Lewis as a barefoot band for part of the video, but in other scenes they all dress up in track suits and baseball caps, with some bold facial-hair decisions. If their version of manhood resembles a Carrie Brownstein Portlandia character more than anyone you probably know, it’s to be sure there are some tears of laughter mixed in when the pathos hits. The song and clip are mostly playful, but Lewis isn’t playing.
