According to a FADER interview with producer Jamie xx, the third, as-yet-untitled album from The xx is on the way sometime next year. By that he means the trio’s decision to stay off the road for most of 2014 outside of special engagements like their intimate residency at New York’s Park Avenue Armory.
“We’ve got quite a lot of songs that are not finished, but I’m excited about it,” Jamie xx explained. “It feels a lot more free than when we were making the last record.”
“The colors and the ideas and the moods on some of these songs are just not things you would write in London,” co-producer Rodaidh McDonald said in a separate interview last June, right before their Reykjavik trip. “It’s about opening things up a bit more. They are a London band, but they’re also a band that’s spent a lot of time in different countries. So we’re trying to push that further.”
As for the solo album Jamie xx has been promising for a while now, it also appears to be nearing the finish line.
“There’s one track where I need to get the vocal on,” he said, “but I don’t know who the vocalist is going to be yet.”
In the meantime, here are some of the singles he’s released on Young Turks to exhibit his wildly expressive work as a solo artists:
