“I just walked in on you playing your own tune.” That was James Blake, teasing Jamie xx during the xx producer’s guest-DJ set last night on BBC Radio 1. Then Blake evidently dropped off a tune of his own, which subsequently debuted on the program.
Blake recently said he’s about halfway done with his new album, the follow-up to last year’s Overgrown. The likes of Chance the Rapper and even Kanye West are potentially involved, and this track — title yet unknown — would certainly complement their presence well. Its detail-rich, lurching foreboding, nearly instrumental but with the sampled phrase “I think about you,” gently evokes other genre-bridging beat makers such as Clams Casino, Forest Swords, and the Yeezus-foreshadowing TNGHT.
You can hear the chat and track a little after the 28-minute mark here, or stream a radio rip of the music below. Also today, Blake’s 1-800 Dinosaur label is streaming fellow U.K. electronic producer Airhead’s new Believe EP via SoundCloud. As for the xx, they’ve been working on their upcoming third album; Jamie xx’s set also premiered new material from John Talabot.
