As easy as it is to criticize the seemingly endless stream of posthumous J Dilla releases these days, the work his mother has personally supervised is worth a second look. Especially this summer’s limited The King of Beats box set, which presents 40 Dilla productions alongside a 10-inch survey of his “Batches” collection, a commemorative booklet featuring exclusive interviews, a 3″ floppy disk with one unreleased beat, and a cassette that has five more. Oh, and the packaging is modeled after the E-Mu SP-1200, Dilla’s beloved drum machine/sampler.

“This project came about by a lot of soul searching and meditation as to what can I do now that my son has so many bootleg projects out by unknown artists without my approval,” Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey told Rolling Stone. “Now that I’m out of mourning and full of insight and feeling my son’s energy radiate around me, I wanted to do something different but iconic; something that people would preserve and relish for a lifetime that spoke quality.”

Pre-orders are set to start next Tuesday, June 24, and ship on August 26. Secure your copy here, and check out a raw track from the sprawling release below…
