Sharing the screen with Tom Waits in Coffee and Cigarettes is one thing, as was that one scene from Dead Man — easily one of the greatest Jim Jarmusch ever directed. But who could predict Iggy Pop’s latest role — the serial killer star of Dario Argento’s latest film, The Sandman?
“Let’s all die horribly together, in a blaze of glory,” says Pop in the movie’s Indiegogo trailer. “If I could play the Sandman for Dario, it would make my life complete … I hope I haven’t just written my own epitaph.”
“I am tried of these Christmas movies showing goodness — beauty, snowflakes, sleds pulled by reindeer,” adds Argento. “I’d rather have a Christmas movie where there is also strength, violence, horror, and this is what I am going to do.”
To help the giallo icon achieve his $250,000 goal, he’s offering a tempting stack of perks, ranging from a month-long Fandor.com membership ($5) to an onscreen role with the Sandman himself ($25,000).
“Working with Iggy Pop is amazing!” Argento added in a press release (via Pitchfork). “Such an interesting and intense personality! I would not even simply say ‘actor,’ that does not cover it. I would rather say ‘a unique presence!’”
As for what the movie’s actually about, here is a synopsis:
THE SANDMAN tells the story of Nathan, a young student in the city who struggles to forget his childhood trauma at the hands of the serial killer dubbed “The Sandman”. Nathan killed The Sandman (Iggy Pop) years ago, on Christmas Eve, after he witnessed the murder of his mother…until he sees the beautiful woman who lives in the apartment across the way dying at the hands of that same masked killer. This brutal murder plunges Nathan into an odyssey into the night country of his past, his dreams…and the buried secrets of The Sandman. Christmas is coming, and so is The Sandman.
