If only all groups could break up this constructively. Just months after the swaggering electronic duo TNGHT‘s hiatus became official, Canadian half Lunice shared the forceful, ominous new track “Can’t Wait To.” Now, former musical partner Hudson Mohawke — the Scottish producer and Kanye West beat maker — has released “Chimes,” the title track from an upcoming solo EP. And it’s another glass-shattering triumph.

The genre descriptor “trap-rave” has always been an awkward fit, but whatever we end up calling music like this, few have proven themselves better than HudMo at finding the connections between heady electronic instrumentals and brash, moody Southern-rap backing tracks. “Chimes” stands out less for its chimes than for a vocal hook that sounds like a man barking, but that comes amid sinister synth pin-pricks and more of those blaring, world-conquering horn fanfares. Mohawke’s first solo EP since 2011′s Satin Panthers arrives on September 30 via Warp, and here’s hoping that dog will hunt.
