The organizers behind the fifth annual Hopscotch Music Festival have revealed its initial headliners, and while some of the names will be familiar to anyone who’s looked at similar lineups this year — St. Vincent, Spoon, Sun Kil Moon — the Raleigh fest continues to lean out into left field. That includes everything from the looming presence of metal (Mastodon, High on Fire) and punk (Death, White Lung) near the top of the bill to such welcome only-at-Hopscotch additions as Tony Conrad, The Haxan Cloak, Reigning Sound, some better-than-nothing form of Hawkwind, and “Improviser-in-Residence” Thurston Moore, who will play a full solo set and “impromptu appearances” throughout the weekend. Forty more artists will also be added to the September 4-6 event soon, bringing the total number of performers up to nearly 160 acts.

“While most of our bigger slots are programmed and now public, we chose to break up the lineup to limit information overload,” explained founding director Greg Lowenhagen. “We’ve presented everyone at once in the past, and because the festival is still five months away, we thought it made sense to pull back and reveal artists in two stages. We hope this approach is more welcoming and makes the lineup easier to digest.”
